Tongue Thrust and Tongue Posture:

A tongue thrust occurs when the tongue rests or moves between or against the teeth during rest, swallowing, or speech. It is also called a reverse swallow, immature swallow, or infantile swallow, as it is a natural swallowing pattern in infants until around 6-12 months of age. Tongue thrust can cause dental issues, speech problems, and swallowing dysfunction.

PATIENT EDUCATION

Tongue Posture:

Proper tongue posture involves the tongue resting fully against the roof of the mouth (palate) and acts as a natural palatal expander. When a person breathes through their mouth, the tongue often rests low in the mouth, leading to muscle weakness or atrophy. Low tongue posture can result in swallowing dysfunction, affecting speech, breathing, chewing, and facial development and narrowing of the palate.

Tongue posture plays a significant role in facial growth and overall oral health, and improper posture may contribute to malignment and other issues related to oral health.
