Young girl mouth breathing. Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy or OMT, Comox Valley, Courtenay, BC

Mouth Breathing and Its Causes:

Around 50% of people breathe through their mouths, often due to nasal congestion, enlarged tonsils, or oral restrictions. There is an 18% reduction in oxygen intake when breathing through the mouth, affecting brain function, athletic performance, and sleep. It may also contribute to anxiety, asthma, and ADHD like symptoms.

PATIENT EDUCATION

Health Implications of Mouth Breathing:

  • Enlarged tonsils and adenoids: Mouth breathing leads to unfiltered air hitting the tonsils, causing inflammation.

  • Crooked teeth and jaw issues: Constant mouth breathing can alter dental development.

  • Facial growth: Over time, mouth breathing can cause a long, narrow face, contributing to crooked teeth and a narrow airway.

Snoring and Sleep Apnea:

Mouth breathing can lead to snoring and sleep apnea, which interrupts sleep and increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. Myofunctional therapy can help reduce these symptoms by re training the facial muscles and improving breathing patterns and airway function, allowing for better sleep quality.
